1. Positioning is Key
The last thing you want to do is hold the club too high up the grip; this mistake is usually common among novice golfers.
When you do this, you’re far more likely to lose control of your swing and cause your shots to come from the heel of the club.
Ideally, you want to leave an inch gap between the end of the grip and the tip of the club. You’ll find that on many grips, there’s a marker where your bottom thumb should go.
Try to use this mark as a guide as to where your grip should be. This will encourage you to grip the club slightly further down and will help steady your swing.
2. Get the Pressure Right
In addition to your positioning, you’ll also need to use the appropriate amount of tension. If your forearms feel tense before you start to swing, you’re gripping too tightly and it’ll stop you from performing an entire shoulder turn.
This is one of the most common golfing mistakes and is especially prevalent if you’re feeling nervous while playing a prestigious tournament.
So, if you’re feeling the pressure during a round, try your best to relax and focus on not gripping the club too tightly.
Top Tip: waggling the club at address is an excellent thing to do because it’ll help ease the tension.
You need to make sure you have the right size grip, otherwise, you’ll put yourself at an automatic disadvantage. The wrong grip size makes it way harder to swing the club squarely at impact.
If you need to check your grip size, just grab the club with your glove hand. Then take note of where the ends of your fingers are in relation to your palm, they should just about touch one another.
Therefore, if you find your fingers overlapping into your palm, your grips too thin. However, if they’re not touching at all, the grips too thick.
