Paul Casey had an anxious wait in the locker room as a late charge from Tiger Woods threatened to knock him off the top slot in the Valspar Championship, played in Innisbrook last weekend. In the end Woods finished one off a play-off-forcing score and the Englishman took the title.
Having started his final round five shots off the lead, Casey finished the tournament on what had seemed at the start of the day to be an unlikely 274 – 10 under par – a score he racked up thanks to a storming final six-under-par final round of 65.
Patrick Reed was also in contention until taking a bogey at the last, ending the tournament nine under, tied for second place with Woods.
It was Casey’s second US PGA Tour win, having won in Houston in 2009.
Justin Rose finished seven under, tied for fifth place.
